Confused About Names?
Before proceeding with the other showing articles I should try to clear up some confusion which is "out there."
There are a lot of fancy breeds with names that are similar to our racing pigeons. For example: Exhibition Homer,
Genuine Homer, German Beauty Homer, Giant Homer and American Show Racer. The latter is not a racer at all; it is a
fancy breed. The name Show Racer is used quite frequently in the shows for birds shown in the unflown classes of
the Flying Birds Section, and this causes more confusion.
Most of those being shown in non-racing club shows are the type which was produced in the United States and
looks like a cross between a racer and an American Show Racer. Is this clearing up the confusion? The Show Racer
(not the American Show Racer) still looks something like a racer and is a beautiful looking bird with nice soft
colouring. However, they would be no match for our sleek true racers.
As I mentioned before the type I prefer is the European Olympiad. They must have a good flying record to compete
in the Olympiad shows. Recently I acquired three pairs of the "made in the U.S.A." Show Racers (not American Show
Racers) from Bob Hampton in Winnipeg. I will be crossing these with my racers to try and re-produce the Olympiad
type that I owned previously. They will not be replacing my true racers, but just creating more
interest.
